FAU Biosphere Project: Invertebrates

Lubber GrasshopperLubber Grasshopper  (Romalea guttata)

The lubber grasshopper is the largest and most distinctive grasshopper you are likely to find in southern Florida. The bright colors of the adult grasshopper are a warning to would-be predators that they are not a tasty snack. Small immature lubbers are black with a red to yellow stripe on their back, and can often be seen swarming on the ground in large numbers when they hatch in the spring.
