Objective 7. The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will strengthen doctoral programs to a position of national leadership by recruiting outstanding graduate students.

• Resources Required: Stipend levels for graduate assistantships will be increased over five years to 110% of the average levels offered by peer universities. We propose to increase average stipend levels (for both Master's and PhD students) from the current level of about $17,000 to $22,000 for 12 months by increasing the average stipend amount by about $1,000 annually. Also, fellowships will be made available to recruit truly outstanding candidates. We would like to supplement a teaching assistantship with a $2,500 fellowship, renewable for up to five years, for a truly outstanding student. We propose to establish one such award annually in each doctoral program, renewable for up to five years. In order to assure support for students during dissertation research, faculty members will get research grants that provide stipends and research support for advanced students. We already have a number of students supported in this manner, and propose to increase that number by one per department annually.
