Objective 6. The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will orient its graduate programs primarily to doctoral degrees.

• Outcome: Our target is to increase the number of PhDs produced annually to about one for each six faculty, corresponding to each faculty member having about one PhD student on average. Since completion of a PhD typically requires six to eight years, the outcome of this objective will require a decade and cannot be achieved within three years. By AY 07-08, however, PhD's awarded annually by the college should increase to about 18. Increased emphasis on the PhD will result in fewer students being admitted to Master's programs, with a concomitant reduction of Master's awards to about 60 per year by AY 07-08. Total graduate enrollment will increase about 7% per year, but the proportion in doctoral programs will increase from the current 40% to 60% by AY 07-08 and eventually to 70-75%.

• Strategy: The principal requirement for a strong doctoral program is to provide the faculty with adequate time to supervise doctoral students and conduct the research necessary to doctoral mentoring. The college is currently critically understaffed for this mission. If faculty numbers grow as needed to account for the projected increase in degrees shown in Objective 1, additional time for faculty to work with doctoral students can be provided by reducing their commitment to service course instruction, as described in Objective 3.
