• Outcome: By AY 07-08, more service courses (defined as courses in which more than 50% of the enrollment is from other colleges) will be taught by full-time instructors. The number of graduate teaching assistants available per FTE enrolled in these courses will improve by 0.1 each year.

• Strategy: The college will add full-time instructors who specialize in teaching science and mathematics to non-scientists and increase the number of graduate teaching assistants available for service courses. The instructors will replace regular faculty in the courses in which basic instruction in the science and math disciplines is essential, allowing these regular faculty additional time to supervise doctoral students as required in connection with Objective 6. Each full-time instructor will teach the equivalent of four courses of 40 students each during the academic year plus two additional such sections in the summer. The number of teaching assistants is currently too small for adequate laboratory safety; a significant increase is needed immediately, followed by continuing growth to reduce the ratio of FTE per TA from the current level to 9.0 in five years.

• Resources Required: The number of instructors will need to increase by three per year and the number of TAs by about 10 per year, assuming that the regular faculty increases are funded as described under Objective 1. As described in more detail under Objective 4, each $3 spent in academic salaries requires approximately $1 in staff salaries, supplies, equipment, and related infrastructure support.
