GOAL 1: ACCESS TO AND PRODUCTION OF DEGREES

Objective 1. The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will increase the growth rate of its overall undergraduate and graduate degree production to about 6% per year.

• Outcome: By AY 07-08, the college will award about 690 degrees annually. Undergraduate degree production will accelerate from the 3.6% average growth rate of the past three years to between 6% and 7%. As mentioned in Objective 4, graduate degree production will begin to shift from Master's to PhD, with a rapid increase in PhD's offset by a decrease in the number of Master's degrees awarded. • Strategy: The College will see increased undergraduate enrollment as a result of an increase in the number of premedical students, and possibly other preprofessional health students, resulting from the establishment of the regional medical campus at FAU. The presence of a medical school will attract undergraduate premedical students because these students see it as an opportunity to get into the medical school. Additionally, the growth of the biotech industry in South Florida will place a demand for skilled labor to staff this industry. This demand will also increase the number of undergraduates in the college.

• Resources Required: The college is currently critically understaffed at all levels. A 6% increase in science degrees awarded cannot be accomplished without at least a 6% increase in faculty, staff, and infrastructure support. Funding for faculty must include startup support for their research, estimated at $150,000 per faculty member on average, plus funding to have them to teach one course each summer. Approximately 25% of the college's graduate teaching assistants are in courses contributing to our own degree production, and these must also increase correspondingly. As described in more detail under Objective 4, each $3 spent in academic salaries requires approximately $1 in staff salaries, supplies, equipment, and related infrastructure support.
