Members of the oroidin family of alkaloids have been isolated from a number of sponges. We are currently conducting biosynthetic experiments with Teichaxinella morchella which are designed to elucidate the detailed metabolic origin of oroidin and stevensine. We have used a cell-free system as well as a cell culture of the source sponge. The latter set of experiments was performed in a collaborative effort with Dr. Shirley Pomponi (Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution).
