Research
Our research interests involve developing and implementing educational initiatives to create an environment in which students are encouraged to utilize critical thinking and a “minds-on” approach to learning chemistry. This research has its basis in cognitive science which has revealed fundamental principles of science learning, including the necessity for a conceptual framework of knowledge, for active learning methods, and for student exploration of the learning process. We are applying these principles by:
- revising chemistry courses at FAU to include conceptually-oriented lectures
- developing integrated laboratory exercises that reinforce essential ideas and include a more structured writing component.
- developing interactive web-based problems
- developing writing assignments to encourage critical thinking skills.
