Degrees:
| Bachelor
of Arts in Biology (BA) |
The BA degree is
intended to provide maximum flexibility for students pursuing study in
interdisciplinary areas such as environmental science or secondary
school teaching. |

of Science in Biology (BS) |
Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS)
The BS degree is recommended for students planning to be professional biologists in industry or governmental service or for graduate work in the biological sciences. Students interested in the following areas should pursue the BS degree in Biology: Premed/Pre Professional, Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or Biotechnology. The current Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS) consists of a three tier system. All students who are interested in the BS degree in Biology must complete all of the courses in Tier I. A total of 27 credits must be completed between Tiers II and III. (A minimum of 12 credits must be completed from Tier II). Please check with the department of biological sciences if you have further questions. Students working towards the BS in Biology can choose from the below areas of emphasis.

| BS Audit Checklist |
Premed/Pre
professional:
Intended for students
who have an interest or desire to enter a Health Professions Graduate
Program (medical, dental, veterinary, optometry, pharmacy, physician
Assistant, etc). (Suggested Courseswork).
|
Marine Biology:
Intended for
students who have an interest in the study of marine organisms, their
behaviors, and their interactions with the environment. Marine
biologists study the plants, animals, and protists of our estuaries,
coasts, and oceans, ranging from whales to microscopic algae and
bacteria’s well as studying marine organisms and their
biological processes within the context of their natural environment.
|
Ecology
and Organismic Biology:
Intended for students
who have an interest in the scientific study of interactions of
organisms with one another and with the physical and chemical
environment. Modern ecology relies heavily on experiments, both in
laboratory and in field settings. This track is also intended for
students interested in the study of animal life. It covers areas
ranging from the structure of organisms to the sub-cellular unit of
life. |
Molecular Biology,
Microbiology and Biotechnology:
Intended
for students who have an interest in the scientific study of the use of
living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human
environment, the scientific study of microorganisms and the scientific
study of the structure, function, and makeup of biologically important
molecules. |
| Minor
in Biological Sciences |
A minor in
Biological Sciences consists of a minimum of 19 credits in biology
courses, to include biodiversity with Lab (BSC 1011, 1011 L).
Biological Principles with Lab (BSC 1010, 1010L). Principles of Ecology
(PCB 4043), and additional courses at the 3000 level or above, at least
one of which must be a lab course. All courses must be completed with a
grade of “ C-“ or better. |
| Undergraduate Honors Thesis Program |
The Department of Biological Sciences offers an Honors Thesis Program that recognizes research accomplishments of talented undergraduates. Eligible students must have a minimum of 20 credits in biology and an overall GPA of 3.2. Students usually begin the program in their sophomore or junior year and conduct independent supervised research during their junior and senior years. A written paper and a seminar describing the results of their research are required in the senior year. Interested students should contact the faculty member whose research interests are closest to those the student wishes to pursue.

| Biotechnology Certificate Program |
The Biotechnology Certificate Program is open to all FAU Biology and Chemistry students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and all students with a Bachelors degree in Biology or Chemistry regardless of the institution. This program is designed to encourage and recognize students preparing for a career in biotechnology. In addition to the requirements for the bachelors' degree sought, students must complete the following courses, or the equivalent with the indicated minimum grade.
MCB 3023--General Microbiology -- (3 credits) C-
MCB 3023--General Microbiology laboratory-(1 credits)B-
BSC 4403--Biotechnology I laboratory -- (2 credits) B-
BSC 4405L--Biotechnology II laboratory -- (2 credits) B-
BCH 3103L--Biochemistry laboratory -- (3 credits) B-
PCB 3063--Genetics -- (4 credits) C-
Students in other departments who feel they may have, or will have, equivalent academic experience should contact Dr. Binninger, SC 210, (561) 297-3323 or Email address: binninge@fau.edu. There are no fees or charges associated with this program above those for normal class registrations.

| Undergraduate Certificate in Environmental Science |
The Environmental Studies Certificate Program allows students to explore environmental issues through a broadly-based interdisciplinary program. The program is designed to: introduce students to the major environmental issues facing our rapidly-changing society; to provide in-depth analysis in several areas of study, including such vital concerns as environmental health, environmental ethics, management strategies for our global and local natural resources, environmental planning and policies, and environmental economics.
Students who already hold a baccalaureate degree may pursue the certificate as a non-degree-seeking student, or in conjunction with a second bachelor's degree. All courses taken in the curriculum may be applied toward other general and specific graduation requirements, and courses taken to fulfill other requirements may be applied to the certificate curriculum. http://www.science.fau.edu/biology/envirosci/undergraduate.html

| Honors Program |
FAU recognizes superior academic
performance by granting baccalaureate degrees of distinction to
undergraduates who have earned at least 45 credits at FAU. The
breakdown for Commencement Honors for the College of Science is as
follows:
- Summa Cum Laude: 3.90
- Magna Cum Laude: 3.70
- Cum Laude: 3.50
