Undergraduate Shadowing Program, Student Information:
Welcome to the Shadowing Externship Direct Independent Study. You are on the right track by registering for this DIS because obtaining hands on experience in the medical field is extremely important for all Pre-Health Professional students.
You will be permitted to register for a one credit DIS (BSC 4905) each semester, six semesters maximum (Five credits of which may count towards your Biology electives). You must shadow a minimum of three hours per week to receive credit. You will be required to maintain the shadowing log sheet as well as submit a pre and post write up. You will also be evaluated at the end of the semester by the health-professional you shadow. You will be allowed to shadow the same health-professional for DIS credit twice (or two semesters). You will be allowed to pick another health-professional to shadow for additional credit thereafter.
Your Responsibilities:
1. Pre-Write-up: You must submit a 1 page typed essay describing your expectations for this externship. This is due by the end of the first week of class. Drop off your paper in the Biological Sciences Department – SC 136.
2. Waiver Form: The signed waiver form is due by the end of the first week of class. Drop off a copy in the Biological Sciences Department – SC 136.
3. Professionalism in the Workplace Presentation – You must completely read through the powerpoint presentation about professionalism in the workplace. You must copy and paste the last slide into a word document, sign it and return it to the Biological Sciences Department, SC 136 by the end of the first week of class.
4. Post Write-up: You must submit a 1 page typed essay summarizing your externship. This is due by reading day. Drop off your paper in the Biological Sciences Department – SC 136.
5. Service Log: The service log must be signed by the Health Care Provider and returned to the Biological Sciences Department – SC 136 by Reading Day.
At the end of the semester long learning experience, we ask that the health professional evaluate you and submit the Student Evaluation form in this packet to the Biological Sciences Department describing their interactions with you, and their overall judgment regarding your qualifications for admission to a health professions school (i.e. Dental, Medical, Optometry, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Veterinary etc.).
