Molecular, Cellular
and Developmental Biology (MCD)
 | The Molecular, Cellular and Development
group is engaged in research in aging, cancer, development and
neuroscience. An excellent infrastructure in, molecular biology,
bioinformatics, and biotechnology serves to bind these areas together.
One research sub-group is focused on the biology of cancer (Narayanan,
Ayyanathan, Hartman, Kumi-Diaka). Another sub-group is focused on
development and aging using functional genomic studies of Drosophila
(Haerry, Murphey, Binninger and Weissbach). Yet another sub-group uses plant
genomics and transgenics to study a variety of issues in plant biology
(Zhang, Proffitt and associate faculty at the US Horticulture Research
Laboratories). The faculty from |
| the MCD cluster are members of the Center for
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology which is a well-equipped
College-wide research center housed in the Biology Department. Many
faculty are also members of the Florida Center for
Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology. The Integrative
Biology Ph.D. program, which is a joint effort between the
Biology and the Biomedical
Science Departments, provides a focal point for graduate
students and postdoctoral fellows in these areas of research. Finally,
the MCD group presents a superb menu of laboratory courses in related
fields for students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. |
