- Which Masters and Doctoral programs are offered?
FAU offers over 50 Masters and 18 Doctoral degree programs. See the Graduate Degree Programs and Requirements in the catalog.
- Can I take graduate courses prior to graduate admission?
Many programs allow non-degree seeking students to enroll in their courses. Non-degree seeking students are those who have not been admitted to a degree program at FAU. Check with the appropriate program advisor for specific information. Additionally, up to 6 graduate credits can be transferred in from another school.
- How many credits may I take as a Non-Degree Seeking Student?
Although there is no limit, only one-third of degree requirements may be earned as a non-degree seeking student.
- As a non-degree seeking student, do I have to fill out an application?
Non-degree seeking students do not apply for admission but do complete the Registration form for Non-Degree seeking students. This form is available at the Office of the Registrar.
- When do I have to apply for admission?
You must submit all application materials by the deadlines announced in the Academic Calendar. However, consideration will be given on an individual basis for applications submitted after the deadline.
- What are the minimum admission requirements for Biology?
A minimum of 3.0 GPA or a GRE score of 1000 in the verbal/quantitative sections.
- Do I have to take the GRE ? ;Yes the GRE is a requirement of the Biology Department. It must be taken before you can be admitted to the Masters Program.
- How do I find a Sponsor/Advisor?Visit our website at http://www.science.fau.edu/biology/pages/faculty.htm to find a professor in your area of interest. Then you need to contact the professor and find out if he/she has an opening in the semester you are applying for.
- Do I need to have a Sponsor? Yes you must have a sponsor/advisor to be admitted to the Biology Masters Program.
- Where can I find out about the availability of financial aid?
The Financial Aid Office, the individual Department offering your program, and the Office of Graduate Studies and Admissions would be helpful to you. See also General Scholarships and Individual College Scholarships sections in the catalog for a listing.
- How long does it take to get a Master's or Doctoral degree?
It varies. Typically a Master's degree requires 30-40 credit hours. For doctoral students, an additional 40 to 80 credit hours are required. Contact your program advisor for further details.
- Do I need to maintain continuous enrollment? Graduate students are required to enroll for at least one credit during at least two semesters (fall, spring, or summer) of every academic year in order to remain eligible for the degree. Please refer to the Graduate Policies and Procedures Manual for detailed information.
- Is there a language requirement for my degree?
Certain degree programs have a foreign language requirement. For specific information, contact the program advisor.
- At what point do I get admitted to candidacy?
Each degree program prescribes requirements for admission to candidacy. To be eligible for candidacy:
- All students must file an approved Admission to Candidacy Form outlining his/her plan of study. In addition, they must attach a completed Research Compliance Verification Form.
- Students pursuing the M.A. or M.S. degree must have satisfied the foreign language requirement as determined by their college. See Degree Programs: Admission to Candidacy.
- Students must be admitted to candidacy a semester before applying for graduation.
- What GPA must I maintain?
For all graduate students, a satisfactory record is defined as an average of B or higher on all work attempted (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) at FAU by the end of the second term of enrollment and all subsequent terms.
- Does FAU have a graduate student association?
Yes, the Graduate Student Association (GSA), is concerned with promoting the well being of all graduate and professional students at FAU. To accomplish this goal, the GSA hosts cultural and academic programs, advocates for graduate and professional student interests within the university community, and works to strengthen the collective voice of graduate and professional students. - How can I get funding to present research at conferences and/or professional meetings?
Some academic departments provide limited funds for travel. For further information, contact the appropriate department. The Boca Graduate Grants Committee (GGC), Broward Graduate Council (BGC), and the Agency for Graduate Concerns (AGC) are other sources of funding for conferences and other research expenses. - Do I need to be registered in the term in which I graduate?
Yes, if you are a thesis or dissertation student.
- How do I apply for graduation?
Students expecting to graduate at the end of a particular semester must file, with their advisor an Application for Degree form, available at the Registrar's Office, by the third week of the semester. It is the student's responsibility to be certain he/she meets all requirements for the degree (see college/department requirements). If the student does not graduate that semester, a new Application for Degree form must be filed the subsequent semester. See Academic Policies/Graduation Procedure for specific deadlines.
- How do I find the proper format for my Thesis or Dissertation?
A "Requirements and Guidelines for Graduate Theses and Dissertations" is available from the new Student Support Services Building, Rooms SU-101, SU-102, on the Boca campus
- When is the last day to submit Master's theses and Doctoral dissertations to the Office of Graduate Studies and Admissions?
Submission deadlines are announced in the Academic Calendar each semester.
- Is there a job placement office on campus?
Career-related assistance is available to graduate and professional students. The Career Development Center has a Co-operative Education Department located in the Student Services Building above the cafeteria, suite 222. Career advisors are available at the Boca Raton campus at (561)297-3520, and at the Davie campus at (954)236-1214.
