FIELDS OF SPECIALIZATION AND SPECIAL INTERESTS

Insect-plant interactions, insect chemical ecology, integrated crop management, host plant resistance, biological control, plant-virus-vector interactions, international agricultural development.

CURRENT RESEARCH
Overall goal is development of environmentally appropriate means of insect control through understanding of insect biology, ecology and physiology.  High priority is given to elucidation of host plant attractants/repellents and pheromones for high priority insect pests of citrus, ornamentals and vegetables including the Diaprepes root weevil, citrus leafminer and Asian citrus psyllid.  This includes use of GC-coupled electroantennograms, GC/MS and behavioral bioassays (e.g., wind tunnel).
Response surface methods are applied to optimization of insect diets to mass rear insects comparable to wild type for behavioral assays.
Classical biological control and chemical ecology of exotic pests.
