Applied Plant Ecologist (Sr. Environmental Scientist)

The Everglades Division seeks a plant ecologist, with an emphasis on below ground processes, to conduct research in support of Everglades restoration and effective water management. The primary responsibility of this position is to examine the connections between belowground nutrient dynamics, primary productivity, and marsh community dynamics, as a function of hydrology, watershed characteristics, and restoration plans.

Requirements
The successful candidate will be an integral member of a multi-disciplinary project examining the restoration of nutrient enriched areas of the Everglades, the Cattail Habitat Improvement Project (CHIP).  The CHIP project is a landscape-scale adaptive management experiment to restore ridge-slough functionality, trophic dynamics, and wildlife diversity and abundance.  The candidate will also have opportunities to conduct research examining plant community responses to altered hydrology throughout the Everglades landscape. Must possess a MS in a natural science discipline with at least six (6) years experience. Ph.D. with post doc experience preferred.  Specific area of expertise can be in wetland/salt marsh ecology, rhizosphere dynamics, or community ecology.  Strong statistical, computational, written and oral communication skills are essential.

Requires graduation from an accredited four (4) year College or University with major course work in Hydrogeology or Engineering Hydrology, or closely related field AND six (6) years progressively responsible experience in water resources planning and protection, which includes four (4) years supervisory experience. A Masters or Ph.D in Hydrogeology or Engineering Hydrology is preferred.

This is a senior level technical position in water resources planning and protection. The position includes technical management of contracts that include advanced numerical simulation of surface water and groundwater systems, including saltwater intrusion. Requires modeling using MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 software and EcoLab, or similar water quality simulation software; and analyzing and describing the effects of regulations, policies, projects, etc. on Broward County water resources. Experience with aquifer recharge, saltwater intrusion, wellhead protection, and alternative water supplies is desirable. Candidates evidencing thorough knowledge of the theory of surface water and groundwater flow; principles of hydrogeology, numerical simulations, and carbonate stratigraphy are preferred.
