Q: Do you have to be a biology major to apply?
A: No. While we encourage students that are majoring in biology to apply, we will also accept students majoring in related fields. However, be aware that you will be matched with a mentor from the Department of Biological Sciences.
Q: My Grade Point Average isn’t quite 3.0, can I still apply to the URM program?
A: Yes. We will consider a promising student who does not meet the 3.0 GPA requirement. Be sure to tell us WHY you are a promising student in your essay and, if possible, make sure your recommendation letters indicate that this experience would be worthwhile for you and that you will perform successfully.
Q: Are there core courses I must take before applying to the URM program?
A: No. As long as you are majoring in biology and chemistry and have an interest in scientific research, you may apply to the program.
Q: Is research experience required to be in the URM?
A: No. While some URM students will have previous research experience, many will be completely new to research. This program is designed to teach you all of the skills necessary to become a successful researcher.
Q: I'm thinking about a career in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine. Can I apply for the URM Program?
A: The URM program is designed specifically for students who wish to pursue a career in scientific research. A different internship program may be more suitable for you.
Q: If I am already working in a lab in the Biology department, can I apply to the URM program and continue this research?
A: Yes. We have several students who were already volunteering or working in labs in the Biology Department and are now fellows in the program. This is the perfect opportunity to continue and gain greater focus on your research.
Q: What time commitment is expected of me when I am accepted into the program?
A: You will be held to a weekly time commitment of 5 hrs in the 1st Spring semester,10 hrs in the 2nd Spring semester, 35 hrs in each Summer semester, and 10 hrs in each Fall semester
